Gustave Eiffel's iron tower, built for the 1889 World Exhibition, is the most visited paid monument on earth. You can take the stairs to the second floor (674 steps) or ride the elevator, then carry on to the summit at 276 meters for a full 360-degree spread of the city. After dark it sparkles with 20,000 bulbs for five minutes on the hour, best caught from the Trocadéro esplanade across the river. Book timed-entry tickets online at least two months out; the slots vanish fast. Come at sunset if you'd rather not share it with the whole world.
